GIS is a geographical research technique developed in the1960's.In recent years, it was mainly used in more than 100 fields of the locallogistics such as resources management, automatic mapping, facilitiesmanagement, urban and regional planning and business management, transportation, oil and gas, education and so on. The term “military logistics”means the military supplies pass through the link of procurement, transportation, storage, packing, maintenance, distribution and recycling, thenarrive ultimately in troop users to be consumed in order to realize thetransfer of the whole process of space and time. Because 80% of data in themilitary logistics information are related to the geographical factors, theapplication of GIS can realize the dynamic management of military supplies to improvethe timeliness, rightness and appropriateness of military logistics support.
1 Introduction
GIS is a technical system which is supported by the computerhardware and software systems to collect, store, manage, compute, operate, analyze, display and describe the relevant data about the geographicaldistribution of the whole or partial space of the Earth's surface (includingthe atmosphere), which has the characteristics of spatial and dynamic capability, spatial area analysis, comprehensivemulti-element analysis and dynamic prediction. GIS is divided into thetheme-based geographical information system, regional information system andGIS tools, and composed of hardware system, software system, geographical dataand practical users. It has functions to complete data collection and input, data editing and updating, data storage and management, spatial inquiry andanalysis, and performance visualization in different stages. At the same time, the development of GIS has the trend towards network, standardization, commercialization, globalization, popularization and systematic specialization.
