A study of influencing factors of urban residents’ trip mode in big cities based on structure model

Abstract:In order to deeplystudy the internal relationship among all kinds of trip mode, and set upstructure mode of trip mode choice, based on the analysis of influencingfactors of urban residents trip mode in big cities, with solutions of structure mode in system engineering modelingtechnology, after setting up adjacency matrix by correspondingoperationin relationships among all kinds of influencing factors,from the adjacency matrix to the reachability matrix, then to decompose the reachability matrix, and this paper finally sets up multi-level hierarchical structureof influencing factors of urban residents trip mode; Figure out the internalrelationship between influencing factors of urban residents trip mode, and itis positive for researchers to solve the problem about trip mode.

At present, with rapid developmentof China’s economy, lots of rural surplus labor force transfers to cities, andthe process of urbanization also becomes faster and faster,. According to ChinaYouth Daily on August 20, 2008 report, up to the end of 2007, the urbanization rateof Chinais 44.9 percent. Over the past 25 years, an average annual increasing is 0.95percentage point; In the next 10-15 years , China's urbanization will be 0.8-1percent at an average growth rate annually, and the urbanization will be anirreversible trend in major cities. Because of the urbanization, passengertransferring system and environment carrying capacity are facing greatchallenges; trip difficulties for big cities also become "urbandisease."  With regard to the tripmode and the model of trip influencing factors , in 1950s, foreign researchersfirstly began to figure out and apply the forecasting model,which was used for major road infrastructure investment decisionsin 1960s. Torluemke and other experts introduced a new evaluation of thetransportation demand management (TDM) method in 1992, and put forward theconcept of trip market, according to trip habits of residents, they inferredand classified a variety of expectations flexibility generated by TDM. In 2000,Wallace and other experts studied the influencingfactors on the resident trip chain,and the purpose was to determine what factors affected the number of residenttrip in the resident trip chain. Through estimating the influencingvariables about TDM and how much TDM affected the resident tripchain, they believed that the resident trip number in the resident trip chainhad something to do with family characteristics, passenger characteristics,trip characteristics, and constituting of the city, and described it with twonegative regression model .

Many scholars have done some research about MNL, NL, Probit andMixed Logit models, that is, their researches mainly focus on the maximizationtheory, modeling and calibration methods, and these theories and methods areused to choose the trip mode, the trip routing (Song Zeng etc. , 2002), thedevelopment of public transportation fares (Si Bing Feng, Gao Ziyou, 2000),parking demand management (An Shi, Wang Jian, 2001), transportation productsmarket sharing projections (Shen Rui, Liu Kai, 2001), passenger flow forecasts(Yan Ji etc. 2001) trafficmode split and other fields, but no systematic study of influencing factors of urbanresidents trip mode in big cities have been done,aswell as don’t find the relationship among these factors, and establish thestructure model.

1 The composition oftrip mode and influencing factors of the trip mode choice 

From the generalviewpoint of research on trip mode in big cities, the resident trip in bigcities can be divided into four, namely, travel on foot, travel by bike (bothhuman powered bike and electric powered bike), travel by bus and private cartravel. The mainly structure of trip mode in the composition of transportation systemin big cities of Chinais shown in Figure 1-1.
