Data science and analytics are attracting more and more attention by researchers and practitioners in recent years. Its development and applications are also growing rapidly. This is also true in aviation industries. Because of the rapid development of advanced Information and Communication Technology nowadays, a massive amount of real time data regarding flight information, flight performance, airport conditions, air traffic conditions, weather, ticket prices, passengers comments, crew comments, etc. are all available in different flight performance monitoring websites, airlines, airports, and social medias. These become valuable assets and opportunities for a new page of aviation research studies.
Study of data science and analytics in aviation is a newly emerging area. Data science and analytics inspire a lot of novel ideas, knowledge, theories, techniques, and applications in tremendous aviation areas such as for risk management and control, risk analytics, disruption management, crew management, planning and scheduling, flight scheduling, flight delay analytic and prediction, weather analytic and prediction, fuel consumption analysis, airport management, air traffic control, customer behavior and preference analysis, revenue management, and more. These drive the further development of different mathematical models, stochastic modeling, optimization methodologies, machine learning, data mining, pattern recognition, big data visualization, etc. to satisfy the needs of these huge aviation industries in this big data era.
This special issue focusses on contemporary research related to data science and analytics in aviation. Particularly, those papers that pinpoint new theories and contain breakthroughs on solving the aviation problems are of considerable interest.
